Now that Arrow has left the building, The Flash has become the oldest Arrowverse show on The CW with nearly six full seasons under its belt. The series was already renewed for a seventh season earlier this year. But given its popularity, it should come as no surprise that The CW intends to keep it on the air for far longer than this. Unfortunately, the ongoing global health crisis means it’s going to be a while before they make this official.
Via CBR, Barry Allen himself, Grant Gustin, appeared on the latest episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast to talk about his work on the series. During their conversation, Gustin revealed that he had been talking to network execs about extending his contract for two more seasons. However, the rise of COVID-19 forced both parties to table these discussions for a later date.

“The conversations actually had started already for adding a potential eighth and ninth [season], but then this pandemic happened, and everything has stopped,” said Gustin. “We don’t know when we’re back, and I don’t know when we’re going to continue the renegotiation talks.”
Concerns surrounding COVID-19 prompted The CW to suspend production on The Flash in mid-March. As a result, the show was forced to cut its sixth season short by three episodes. Gustin’s current contract only covers him through season 7. However, it’s likely that Gustin will negotiate an extension with The CW once Hollywood activity resumes.
The Flash season 6 concludes on Tuesday, May 12 on The CW.
