Like other networks, The CW is facing a dry spell in new programming brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. To combat this, The CW is licensing shows from other platforms to fill out their schedule. Variety brings word that The CW will begin airing episodes from DC Universe’s Swamp Thing’s first season later this year.
This news comes a few weeks shy of the first anniversary of Swamp Thing’s premiere on DC Universe and subsequent cancellation. The show received largely positive reviews from critics and fans. But unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to convince DC Universe to keep it on the air for the long haul. The first signs of trouble with Swamp Thing were actually reported one month before its debut, when the season’s episode count was shaved down from 13 episodes to 10. Its cancellation was also followed by reports that WarnerMedia would “re-evaluate” DC Universe’s role before launching its then-unnamed HBO Max streaming service.

Swamp Thing won’t be the first DC Universe series to air on The CW. That distinction will belong to Stargirl when it premieres next week. Additionally, The CW has licensed both seasons of Tell Me a Story, which was just canceled by CBS All Access. The CW will also air episodes of the Canadian drama series Coroner and the U.K. comedy Dead Pixels.
It’s still not clear when Swamp Thing will premiere on The CW. However, a fall debut seems likely.
