After languishing in development at Hulu for over a year, the TV series based on Jeff Lemire’s Sweet Tooth recently changed hands to Netflix. Now, the show has finally gotten the green light to move past the pilot stage. Variety is reporting that Netflix has given an eight-episode order to the upcoming adaptation of Lemire’s Vertigo comic book series.
Hulu originally gave a pilot order to Sweet Tooth in 2018 with Jim Mickle writing and directing the first episode. Mickle will continue to serve as a co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Beth Schwartz. Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell, and Linda Moran will also executive produce through their Team Downey banner.
Lemire began publishing Sweet Tooth through Vertigo in 2009. The post-apocalyptic series centers on Gus, a young boy with deer-like features who ventures beyond his home in the forest and links up with several other animal-human hybrids to unlock the mysteries of their new surroundings. Lemire produced 40 issues before concluding the series in 2013. Christian Convery will play Gus on the TV show. He’ll lead a cast that also includes Nonso Anozie, Adeel Akhtar, and Will Forte. James Brolin will serve as the series’ narrator.

Lemire is certainly having a moment in the comic book world right now. He and artist Andrea Sorrentino won the Eisner Award for Best New Series last year for their latest collaboration, Gideon Falls. Additionally, Lemire is working on adapting one of his other creator-owned titles, Black Hammer, for TV. Last fall, he announced that he completed the script for that series’ pilot episode.
Netflix’s Sweet Tooth series is still without a premiere date.
