After months of limbo, Altered Carbon has officially been cancelled by Netflix. Deadline broke the story earlier today, and noted that the actual decision came down in April. Additionally, the report says that it was not a COVID-19-related cancellation. Instead, Netflix decided that the high cost of seasons 1 and 2 made season 3 untenable.
Laeta Kalogridis adapted Richard K. Morgan’s Altered Carbon novels for the Netflix TV series. The show took place in a far future where the rich can escape death by downloading their minds into new bodies called sleeves. The main character was Takeshi Kovacs, seemingly the last survivor of a rebel faction called the Envoys. Joel Kinnaman portrayed Kovacs in season 1, while Anthony Mackie took over the role in season 2. Will Yun Lee recurred in both seasons as the original Takeshi Kovacs.

Chris Conner co-starred in both seasons as Poe, an artificial intelligence that modeled itself after Edgar Allan Poe. Simone Missick, Lela Loren, Dina Shihibi, Torben Liebrecht, and James Santo joined the cast in season 2.
Netflix also previously debuted an anime film called Altered Carbon: Resleeved earlier this year. However, there’s currently no indication that the series will continue in any form after the cancellation.
