In 2012, one year after ending Smallville, The CW revisited Oliver Queen with Arrow, a show that gave way to an entire shared universe of small-screen superheroes that eventually became known as the Arrowverse. But now that Arrow is over and Oliver Queen is dead and buried, the Arrowverse name may be on the way out. Now, The CW has just offered proof that they’re about to retire the Arrowverse title for good.
All of The CW’s DC series are currently in limbo due to production shutdowns brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. Regardless, The CW has every intention of bringing The Flash, Supergirl, et al. back to its ranks next year. The CW has just released a new promo that once again confirms that its superhero shows will return in 2021. But the new spot blatantly refers to this programming block as The CWverse. The first half of the promo essentially recycles old footage from The CW’s six DC titles, including shots from last year’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. But at the 1:10 mark, it becomes a trailer for Superman and Lois, which features Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprising their roles as the title characters.
Superman and Lois isn’t the only new addition to the Arrowverse/CWverse on the horizon. Next year will also see the introduction of Javicia Leslie as the new Batwoman. The CW is also reportedly still developing its Green Arrow and the Canaries spinoff. But while speaking with Digital Spy last month, executive producer Marc Guggenheim said that he can’t reveal new details about that series until the network gives him the go-ahead.
