John Cena Will Star In Peacemaker, a Suicide Squad Spinoff For HBO Max

At DC FanDome, it was revealed that John Cena will portray Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad. During that event, Cena likened his character to a “douchey Captain America.” However, Cena’s role won’t simply be a one-off in the film. HBO Max has announced that Cena and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn will reteam for an eight-episode Peacemaker series.

Gunn will write and direct several episodes of Peacemaker in early 2021 before he has to begin work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel. Gunn will also executive produce Peacemaker with Peter Safran. Additionally, Cena is attached as a co-executive producer.

The new series will dive into Peacemaker’s backstory and explore how he became the man he is today.

“Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag,” said Gunn in a statement. “I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”

The Suicide Squad will hit theaters Aug. 6, 2021. Peacemaker doesn’t currently have a premiere date on HBO Max.
