Star Trek: Discovery ushered in a bold new era for its namesake franchise when it premiered on CBS All Access in 2017. Since then, it’s given rise to three new shows on the platform, with more on the way. This momentum isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Alex Kurtzman has revealed that he and his team already have Star Trek’s small-screen future mapped out.
Kurtzman shared this news while appearing on The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast (via ComicBook.com). He confessed that the release dates for the upcoming shows are subject to change. Regardless, he explained how rigorous the development process can be.
“Heather Kaden and Aaron Baiers, who work with me at [production company] Secret Hideout — we literally just got off a call with the network mapping out with us through 2027,” said Kurtzman. “Now when I say that, it’s not like it’s set in stone. It’s just, ‘Here’s a plan. Here’s what we’re looking at. Here’s how the different shows are going to drop.’ Consider the fact that it takes a year from inception — from starting production — to airing, you have to plan way, way, way in advance to get these things done. And you have to stay on top of the zeitgeists and make sure that what you’re doing is relevant. So you have to plan so far in advance now in different kinds of ways [like safety and budget] to seem loose and improvisational, but there’s nothing loose and improvisational about it.”

CBS All Access followed up Discovery with its Star Trek: Short Treks anthology series that debuted in 2018. Earlier this year, CBS All Access brought Patrick Stewart back to Starfleet in Star Trek: Picard, which has already been renewed for a second season. Secret Hideout has also branched out into animation with Star Trek: Lower Decks and the upcoming Nickelodeon series Star Trek: Prodigy. Additionally, the producers are still planning Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and a new spinoff headlined by Michelle Yeoh’s Philippa Geogiou. Many of these series will debut after CBS All Access rebrands as Paramount+ next year.
The third season of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on October 15.
