Showrunner Says Greg Berlanti Convinced Him to Do Superman and Lois

While the name ‘CW-verse’ perfectly describes the amount of superhero-related series run by The CW, that superhero universe might also be called Berlanti-verse due to the impact Greg Berlanti had on its creation. The latest entry in the Berlanti-verse is Superman and Lois, a show that brought back Tyler Hoechlin’s Clark Kent/Superman and Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois Lane on the small screen. While talking with EWSuperman and Lois showrunner Todd Helbing credited Berlanti for convincing him to do the show. The former Flash showrunner was considering leaving the superhero world for a while.

“I actually was working on a couple other shows, and I swore that I would take a break from superhero stuff,” he said. “[Berlanti] was like, ‘Well, let’s just do a family show. He’s like, ‘Clark and Lois are married. I don’t know anything else, so let’s start there.'”

Much to their credit, there has never been a version where Lois and Clark have to deal with two teenage boys and their adolescent drama. But more than that, the couple neglected to tell their children the truth about their dad’s real identity, which may lead to some inconvenience. As for connections to the larger Berlanti-verse, we know that Arrow‘s John Diggle will show up.

In the past, Helbing also worked on Smallville, the show that took on Clark Kent’s adolescence. One of his most significant challenges was to avoid the Superman clichés when it comes to revealing his real nature to his sons.

“Just like the way to make that feel real and not like it is a trope, not like people have seen that a million times before, and have it land on you as a viewer in the same way that it’s landing on the boys and Clark and Lois,” said Helbing.

Superman and Lois will premiere on The CW on February 23.
