Three weeks from now, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will debut on Disney+. The show should have kicked off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that honor passed to the WandaVision mini-series after the COVID-19 forced the Marvel producers to replan the schedule. While the fans are eager to discover the new adventures of the Falcon, now that Steve Rogers passed him his legacy, one key individual wasn’t very sure about the show at first. Apparently, actor Anthony Mackie had to be talked into doing the project.
“To be honest, I’ve had trepidation from the beginning. I was really afraid of the idea,” he said while talking with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar+). “Working on so many Marvel projects, and seeing the end result and the effect that they have on people, I was afraid that the quality of the production would be taken down for television. I was afraid that you can’t do things on television that you can do in theatres.”
The actor pointed at the people’s reactions to Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame in the theatres as something that he was afraid he couldn’t achieve in television. However, after talking with all the people involved in the project, he became convinced that the show can reach the same emotional levels.
“Kevin [Feige] promised me that it wasn’t going to be different. He’s not going to tarnish the Marvel brand by trying to just blow out as much content as he could. And I trusted him on that. They haven’t let me down yet, so I just went along for the ride on faith of their past work.”

And it appears that Mackie put his heart and soul into the upcoming series. Also talking with SFX Magazine, Falcon and the Winter Soldier creator Malcolm Spellman said that the actor even helped craft his own dialogue with the ever-present Sebastian Stan.
“These guys have already written entire mythologies and backstories with emotional and psychological dimensions to these characters that they show up with,” Spellman said. “And now, with six hours, we get to bring it to life. Sebastian is excellent at wearing all that trauma on his sleeve in moments of silence, as Bucky’s gone from one war to the next. And there’s a huge, huge moment for Sam’s character, where it’s basically make or break for him.”
He then revealed having talked about that specific moment for hours with Mackie, praising his knowledge about the character.
“Because Anthony knows what this character is going to do in that world. And the truth of it that we’re creating: you feel it. He crushed it!”
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will debut on Disney+ on March 19.
