George R.R. Martin Is Developing a Game of Thrones Broadway Play

While HBO has no less than five Game of Thrones spinoffs in the works, George R.R. Martin isn’t done expanding the franchise. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Martin is developing a Game of Thrones Broadway play. It’s also being planned for a release in London’s West End and in Australia.

The play will serve as a prequel to the Game of Thrones series, and it takes place 16 years earlier at the Great Tourney at Harrenhal. That was the infamous tournament where Prince Rhaegar Targaryen displayed his love for Lyanna Stark; which led to Robert’s Rebellion. Martin’s novels have also established that Ned Stark, Jaime Lannister, Robert Baratheon, Prince Oberyn Martell, and Ser Barristan Selmy were all present for the tournament. Regardless, there are still secrets about that event which will finally be revealed, according to the official synopsis.

“The play will for the first time take audiences deeper behind the scenes of a landmark event that previously was shrouded in mystery. Featuring many of the most iconic and well-known characters from the series, the production will boast a story centered around love, vengeance, madness and the dangers of dealing in prophecy, in the process revealing secrets and lies that have only been hinted at until now.”

Martin is writing the story, and working alongside playwright Duncan MacMillan. Dominic Cooke is set to direct the play, which is being produced by Simon Painter and Tim Lawson.

The original New York production will likely debut in 2023. HBO reportedly has no role in the development of the play. However, the network will have the option to invest in it at a later date.
