Warning: There are spoilers ahead for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 5!
Who will wield the shield? Well, it’s been a foregone conclusion since Avengers: Endgame. But now that John Walker has flamed out, we’re one step closer to the next Captain America. Disney+ has premiered the fifth episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and we want to know what the Superhero Hype community thinks about it!
Shortly after John murdered one of the Flag Smashers in full view of the public, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes track him down. They try to convince John to hand over the shield and turn himself in without a fight. However, John is in no mood to see reason. John fights Falcon and the Winter Soldier simultaneously, and he more than holds his own. Ultimately, Sam and Bucky win the battle, but Sam’s mechanical wings are badly damaged. Bucky also gives the shield back to Sam, who then tries to wipe the blood from it.
John returns to the U.S. and is publically stripped of his rank and his position as Captain America. In private, John and his wife are approached by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Somehow, the Contessa knows that John took the super soldier serum. She also urges him to answer her call, when it comes. Meanwhile, Bucky leads the Dora Milaje to Helmut Zemo. Additionally, Bucky convinces Ayo to do him a favor.
Back in the United States, Sam returns to see Isaiah Bradley and get the first-hand account of his time as a super soldier. Isaiah reveals that he was imprisoned for rescuing his fellow soldiers from enemy hands. Isaiah also says that he was only freed by a sympathetic nurse, and he refuses Sam’s offer to take his story public.

Dispirited, Sam returns to his sister’s home, only to discover that Sarah can’t sell the family’s fishing boat. Subsequently, Sam calls in some favors to help him fix the boat. Bucky reunites with Sam, and gives him a package from the Wakandans. They also bond while working on the boat, and soon come to terms with each other. As they wait for the Flag Smashers to reemerge, Sam trains with Cap’s shield and appears to accept that he’s meant to be Captain America.
In Madripoor, Sharon Carter seemingly arranges for Batroc to be released from prison. Soon after, Batroc joins Karli Morgenthau and the Flag Smashers in New York, where they plan their next attack. Sam gets an advance warning about the Flag Smasher’s whereabouts and opens the case that Bucky gave him. In the mid-credits scene, John creates his own version of Cap’s shield out of scrap metal and his military medals.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s first five episodes are on Disney+. The sixth and final episode will debut on Friday, April 23.
