During its run on Disney+, WandaVision led many fans to speculate that the series was building towards an appearance by Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. It seemed like a natural progression since Elizabeth Olsen is reprising her role as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Now, in a new cover story for the latest issue of Rolling Stone, Kevin Feige has confirmed that Strange was intended to appear in the WandaVision finale.
Via MovieWeb, Feige revealed that WandaVision‘s various fake commercials were building towards that reveal. Apparently they were Strange’s way of trying to breakthrough Wanda’s illusions. Additionally, Cumberbatch even signed a deal to appear in the final episode. However, Feige and the show’s creative team ultimately decided against going through with the cameo.
“Some people might say, ‘Oh, it would’ve been so cool to see Doctor Strange,” said Feige. “But It would have taken away from Wanda. We didn’t want the end of the show to be commoditized to go to the next movie – here’s the white guy, ‘Let me show you how power works.'”

That decision led to rewrites for both WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness. Feige acknowledged the challenges of Marvel’s creative process with the following quote:
“[A] wonderful combination of very dedicated coordination, and chaos. Chaos magic.”
Rolling Stone‘s “Secrets of WandaVision” story will also feature interviews with Olsen, Paul Bettany, Kathryn Hahn, and Teyonah Parris. It will be out in stores this month.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on March 25, 2022.
