Jensen Ackles Is Executive Producing a Potential Supernatural Prequel Series

Supernatural may have wrapped up its 15-season run last fall, but The CW isn’t done with the franchise. Via Deadline, The CW is developing a new Supernatural prequel series, The Winchesters. The proposed series would follow the story of John and Mary, the parents of Sam and Dean Winchester. Additionally, Supernatural star Jensen Ackles is executive producing the series with his wife, Danneel. Additionally, Ackles will reprise his role as Dean Winchester as the narrator of the series.

According to Deadline, “The Winchesters is the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.”

“After Supernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over,” Ackles in a statement. “Because like we say in the show, ‘nothing ever really ends, does it?’ When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”

Robbie Thompson., a former co-executive producer of Supernatural, is also set to write the script for The Winchesters.

Supernatural featured both John and Mary at various points during its run. A demon murdered Mary (Samantha Smith) when Sam was a baby. That’s why John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) became a hunter, and also brought his sons into the family business. Ironically, it was Mary and her family that were the hunters before John Winchester. John died in the season 2 premiere after reuniting with his sons. However, Mary returned to the show at the end of season 11. when Amy Gumenick portrayed a younger version of Mary after her resurrection.

The CW has previously tried to create spinoffs for Supernatural, including Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters. Regardless, the direct connection to the original show may allow The Winchesters to go to series.
