One of 2020’s most talked-about new shows was Lovecraft Country, which wrapped up its 10-episode first season back in October. Unfortunately, it looks like the Freeman family won’t be coming back for more supernatural adventures on HBO. Deadline brings word that the network has decided not to renew the series for another season.
“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country,” said HBO in a new statement. “We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”
The series was based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff. It was set in the 1950s at the height of segregation. Lovecraft Country starred Jonathan Majors as Atticus Freeman, a Black Korean War veteran who journeys across the country in order to learn more about his family’s ancestry. Along the way, he navigates an endless series of racist terrors and otherworldly monsters. HBO also presented a companion podcast, Lovecraft Country Radio, hosted by Ashley C. Ford and series writer Shannon Houston.

Despite its cancellation, the creator and stars of the show have plenty of exciting new projects to fill their schedules in the coming months. Showrunner and executive producer Green was recently hired to write and direct Tomb Raider 2 for MGM. Meanwhile, Majors is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where he will play Kang the Conqueror.
