Victoria Cartagena is getting another shot at playing Renee Montoya in a live-action DC show. According to Deadline, the former Gotham actress will appear as a series regular in the next season of The CW’s Batwoman, playing a new version of the hard-boiled ex-cop.
Similar to her comic book counterpart, Batwoman will introduce viewers to Montoya as an LGBTQ+ character who has resigned from the GCPD due to its rampant corruption. Instead, she runs the “freaks division,” which suddenly sees an uptick in action. This incarnation of Montoya is described as “righteous and pragmatic,” and she also has “a very personal (and mysterious) mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary.”
Cartagena previously recurred as Montoya throughout Gotham’s first season, working for the GCPD alongside Crispus Allen (Andrew Stewart-Jones). She was also revealed to have had a relationship with Jim Gordon’s fiancée, Barbara. In more recent years, Cartagena has booked roles on shows like You, Jessica Jones, and Manifest. She also appeared in 21 Bridges in 2019 and starred in two episodes of Apple TV+’s Servant earlier this year.

Last year, Rosie Perez brought Montoya to life on the big screen in Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey. But given the film’s anemic performance at the box office, it seems unlikely that Perez will be reprising this role anytime soon. Alyssa Diaz will soon provide the character’s voice in Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two, which hits Blu-ray next week.
Batwoman season 3 will premiere on Wednesday, October 13 on The CW.
