The first leg of The Lord of the Rings’ journey is officially in the books. Via Deadline, Amazon has announced that the first season of their highly-anticipated TV series wrapped production in New Zealand earlier today. And more importantly, they finally shared that fans will be able to return to Middle-Earth on September 2, 2022.
The show still doesn’t have a proper title. However, Amazon was nice enough to share the first official photo from the series premiere, which can be seen above. The streamer wouldn’t divulge the identity of the character who appears at the bottom of the image. But since that looks an awful lot like Rivendell, our money’s on the young Galadriel, played by Morfydd Clark.
The Lord of the Rings takes place thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s original series of novels. Instead, viewers will witness the Second Age, a time of “relative peace” in the region that’s suddenly interrupted by the re-emergence of evil. With a budget of $465 million, it’s really no surprise that the series will need more than a year to complete post-production. And as is the strategy with many Amazon shows these days, new episodes will be released weekly rather than all at once.

“The journey begins September 2, 2022 with the premiere of our original The Lord of the Rings series on Prime Video,” said Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke in a new statement. “I can’t express enough just how excited we all are to take our global audience on a new and epic journey through Middle-Earth! Our talented producers, cast, creative, and production teams have worked tirelessly in New Zealand to bring this untold and awe-inspiring vision to life.”
“As Bilbo says, ‘Now I think I am quite ready to go on another journey,’” added showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. “Living and breathing Middle-Earth these many months has been the adventure of a lifetime. We cannot wait for fans to have the chance to do so as well.”
