Ever since Star Trek: Discovery debuted in 2017, the Star Trek universe has been expanding at a rapid pace and dominating the streaming realm. And according to Alex Kurtzman, there are no plans to slow things down. In a new interview with The New York Times, the chief architect of the franchise’s small-screen efforts revealed that a new series is in the works that will focus on trainees at the Starfleet Academy.
It’s still early, so Kurtzman couldn’t reveal much about the new show’s plot or characters. But apparently, Paramount+ is looking to gear the series toward a younger audience. This shouldn’t come as a surprise. Paramount+ is already hoping to reach a new generation of viewers with Star Trek: Prodigy, a new animated series premiering later this year.
Another big Star Trek project in the works is the previously-announced Section 31. That series will have Michelle Yeoh reprising her Discovery role as Empress Philippa Georgiou. As most die-hard Trek fans already know, the show’s title refers to a clandestine organization initially established within Starfleet Intelligence. However, it eventually went rogue, giving its members freedom to neutralize threats on their own terms.

Meanwhile, Kurtzman’s involvement with Star Trek has just been secured for the long haul. He recently signed a new five year contract extension with CBS that’s estimated to be valued at $160 million. Under the deal’s terms, he will continue to shepherd a multitude of new Trek shows along with other non-Trek projects like Paramount+’s upcoming re-imagning of The Man Who Fell to Earth.
