HBO Max is Developing a Penguin Spinoff From The Batman

According to Colin Farrell, his take on Oswald Cobblepot/the Penguin only appears in a handful of scenes in The Batman. However, he might be getting more screen time on HBO Max. Variety is reporting that the streaming service is currently developing a spinoff series for Farrell’s character.

Farrell has already been approached about starring in the series, but no deal is in place yet. Apparently, HBO Max wants to use the show to explore Cobblepot’s rise to power, a narrative arc that was previously explored over the course of five seasons on Fox’s Gotham. Regardless, having the show air on a less-restrictive platform like HBO Max could give the producers the chance to explore even darker details of his journey to becoming one of the city’s top crime lords in a way that Gotham never could.

According to the report, Lauren LeFranc will write the Penguin spinoff. LeFranc isn’t a stranger to superhero properties, having previously worked as a writer and producer on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. She has also written several episodes of Chuck, Hemlock Grove, and YouTube Premium’s Impulse.

HBO Max is already looking to expand The Batman’s universe with another spinoff focusing on the GCPD. Joe Barton remains attached as the showrunner for that project. Additionally, HBO Max continues to develop a wide range of series that tie into other DC films, including Peacemaker, which follows the events of The Suicide Squad.

The Batman will hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
