The latest season of Titans featured some of the most intense fight choreography in the show’s history. Stunt coordinator Larnell Stovall was faced with the daunting task of making each of the series’ heroes and villains unique in terms of their individual fighting styles. But it sounds like he had a great group of actors to help him bring his ideas to the screen. HBO Max has released a new behind-the-scenes look at how Stovall’s team managed to make each character shine.
For Ryan Potter (Beast Boy), stunts came easy because he’s been studying martial arts since he was nine years old. But some of the other characters proved more challenging, like Savannah Welch’s Barbara Gordon. Her character may be confined to a wheelchair, but she still managed to get in on some of the action. And in the end, Stovall described his experience working with Welch as “a highlight of the season.”

Stovall also discussed what it was like to explore the dichotomy between Starfire (Anna Diop) and Blackfire (Damaris Lewis). He explained how Diop brings a “raw intensity” to her fights, and doesn’t need a lot of takes to nail a scene. But while Kori’s style is “abrupt, quick, and powerful,” her sister’s technique is more “grounded” and “animalistic.” Blackfire’s style also has roots in Brazilian capoeira, which allowed Lewis to use her extensive dance background to her advantage.
However, the new season’s standout pairing was easily Nightwing and Red Hood. As a student of Batman, Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) knows multiple styles of martial arts, from Kali to Muay Thai. But Curran Walters’ Jason Todd has the same set of skills. And ever since his transformation into Red Hood, he’s also not afraid to use a gun. According to Stovall, Jason “can express himself in a much more vicious way,” and this was key to making Walters and Thwaites’ characters feel as different as possible.
