Netflix Orders a Series Based on Scott Snyder and Tony Daniel’s Nocterra

Earlier this year, writer Scott Snyder and artist Tony S. Daniel debuted their new sci-fi/horror comic, Nocterra, for Image Comics. Now, Netflix has placed Nocterra in development as a TV series. Daniel’s Nocterra.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Roberto Patino will write, develop, and executive produce Nocterra for Netflix. This is Patino’s first project in his overall development deal for Netflix. Patino is currently the showrunner of HBO Max’s DMZ adaptation. James Wan will also executive produce Nocterra for Netflix, alongside Michael Clear and Rob Hackett.

Nocterra follows a young woman named Val Riggs ten years after the sun mysteriously went dark. In the new world that emerged, everything from plants to humans and animals were irrevocably transformed into nightmarish creatures known as Shades. The only way to avoid being changed is to remain illuminated at all times. To make a living in the new world, Val works as a Ferryman and transports civilians to illuminated sanctuaries.

Val’s adoptive brother, Emory, also plays a role in the series as he battles an infection that may turn him into a Shade. Out of desperation, Val accepts a new client that could shed some light on what happened to the sun. It also means that several new enemies pursue Val in order to find her latest clients.

Patino didn’t share many details about the Nocterra adaptation. But he did go out of his way to thank Netflix for the opportunity.

“Netflix is an extraordinary champion of intentional and inclusive storytelling, and I’m so eager to use this opportunity to tell bold stories that properly represent the Latinx community in entertaining, exhilarating and powerful ways,” said Patino. “I couldn’t be happier to call Netflix my new home, and I can’t wait to hit the ground running with Nocterra and my boundary-pushing friends and partners at Atomic Monster.”
