Colin Farrell Confirmed To Star in HBO Max’s Penguin Spinoff

Back in September, word broke that HBO Max was developing another spinoff from The Batman that would explore how Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot rose through the ranks of Gotham City’s criminal underworld to become the ruthless crime boss known as the Penguin. At the time, no deal with Farrell was in place, but now he’s officially onboard. Variety is reporting that Farrell has signed on to star in and executive produce the upcoming series.

The report also confirms that Lauren LeFranc (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) is still writing the script for the new spinoff. Additionally, The Batman director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark will executive produce the show through their respective 6th and Idaho and Dylan Clark Productions banners.

Much of the buzz surrounding The Batman has paid close attention to Farrell’s shocking transformation for the movie, which finds him under several layers of prosthetic makeup. In fact, some of his co-stars, including Jeffrey Wright, claimed they didn’t even recognize him when he showed up on set. Fans were treated to even more footage of Farrell’s take on the iconic villain when The Batman’s second trailer premiered during DC FanDome earlier this year. However, there might not be much left of him to see. Farrell previously claimed that he only shows up in a handful of the scenes in the film.

The unnamed Penguin series is one of two The Batman spinoffs currently in the works at HBO Max. The streamer is also developing another series focusing on the Gotham City Police Department, with Joe Barton acting as showrunner. Both shows join several other big-screen DC offshoots on the horizon, including January’s Peacemaker series from James Gunn.

The Batman will hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
