Over a decade ago, director Edgar Wright adapted Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novels as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. While that film didn’t light the box office on fire, it became a cult classic. However, Scott may soon get a second chance at stardom. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Scott Pilgrim animated series is in development at Netflix.
O’Malley is directly involved with the new adaptation as a writer and an executive producer. Are You Afraid of the Dark? showrunner BenDavid Grabinski is also writing and executive producing the potential show with O’Malley. If the series goes forward, O’Malley and Grabinski will be co-showrunners on the project. Wright and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World screenwriter Nira Park are also executive producing the series. However, it’s unclear if they have any direct creative involvement.

The first Scott Pilgrim graphic novel was released in 2004, and it became an indie hit. O’Malley wrote and illustrated five additional Scott Pilgrim graphic novels before bringing his series to a close in 2010. In the comic, and the film inspired by it, Scott is a musician and a slacker whose life is upended by the enigmatic Ramona Flowers. Scott immediately pursues a relationship with Ramona, which attracts the attention of her seven evil exes. In order to win Ramona’s heart, Scott has to defeat all of the exes in battle.
If the series goes forward, it will be produced by Netflix and Universal’s UCP. Anime studio Science SARU is attached to provide the animation, with Abel Gongora slated to direct the show. At least that’s what THR says. And we believe them. Of course we do.
