James Gunn is Developing Another Suicide Squad Spinoff For HBO Max

The Suicide Squad had a dismal reception at the box office last summer, but it’s paying dividends for HBO Max. The spinoff series, Peacemaker, has become one of HBO Max’s most successful original shows. And now, it may not be the only Suicide Squad spinoff on the way. During an appearance on Deadline‘s Hero Nation podcast, director (and Peacemaker series creator) James Gunn revealed that a second spinoff is in development.

“We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe,” said Gunn. “I can’t say anything. It is connected to this universe, and I don’t think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker; it won’t be as much a comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe.”

Deadline’s report also states that “the project is in the embryonic stages with nothing written or greenlit. But HBO Max are said to be high on it based on Gunn’s enthusiasm for the idea.”

However, it’s unclear which characters could appear in the series. Most of the new and returning Task Force X members died in The Suicide Squad. Bloodsport and Harley Quinn also seem unlikely to be featured, because Idris Elba and Margot Robbie have demanding film schedules.

If the show is built around one of the Task Force X survivors, that leaves two possibilities: Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2 or King Shark, as voiced by Sylvester Stallone. Regardless, it’s possible that the leading character will be someone else entirely.

Additionally, Gunn indicated that chances are very good that Peacemaker will return for a second season.

“There’s a really good chance of [a renewal],” said Gunn. “We’re the biggest show in the world right now.”
