Warner Bros. Announces The Batman Sequel at CinemaCon

This week’s CinemaCon festivities have resumed with Warner Bros. taking the stage at Caesar’s Palace, and the studio just announced that The Batman sequel is officially happening, with Robert Pattinson returning as the Dark Knight.

Matt Reeves also came out onstage during WB’s presentation and confirmed that he will be back to write and direct the sequel after co-writing the first film with Peter Craig. So far, The Batman has made nearly $760 million worldwide during its theatrical run. It also achieved the second best pandemic-era opening after Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film is currently available to stream on HBO Max and will be released on Blu-ray next month.

“Thank you all for your tremendous support for The Batman,” said Reeves (via Deadline). “We couldn’t have gotten here without the faith and enthusiasm of all your teams around the world. I’m excited to jump back into this world for the next chapter.”

Right now, it’s anyone’s guess as to which villains Reeves is considering for The Batman 2. A number of fans are probably hoping to see more of Barry Keoghan’s Joker, who briefly showed up at the end of the first film. Keoghan’s Clown Prince of Crime also appeared more prominently in a deleted scene that was released online last month. Regardless, Reeves has indicated that the Joker won’t factor into the sequel. But he has expressed an openness to including more fantastical villains like Mr. Freeze, something that Christopher Nolan was vehemently opposed to while making his own Dark Knight trilogy.

Warner Bros. hasn’t announced a release date for The Batman 2. In the meantime, Reeves is also developing two spinoff projects for HBO Max, including a Penguin series for Colin Farrell and another show revolving around Arkham Asylum.
