Jesse L. Martin Is Leaving The Flash After Eight Seasons

After eight seasons on The Flash, Jesse L. Martin will no longer be a series regular. According to Deadline, Martin was not asked to come back as a regular cast member. However, he is expected to return for a few episodes next season. In the meantime, Martin is going to headline a new drama pilot for NBC.

Martin’s new pilot is called The Irrational, which is based upon Dan Ariely’s novel Predictably Irrational. The potential series focuses on Alec Baker (Martin), “a world-renowned professor of behavioral psychology with a unique insight into human nature who lends his expertise to an array of high-stakes cases involving governments, corporations and law enforcement. However, he meets his match in a female domestic terror suspect who turns his world upside down.”

The Irrational pilot will be filmed in June, outside of the traditional pilot season. Since production of both the pilot and The Flash will be in Vancouver, the door is open for Martin to appear in as many as five episodes in season 9.

Martin has been with The Flash since the first season as Detective Joe West, the surrogate father Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), and the father of Iris West (Candice Patton). He previously co-starred in NBC’s Law & Order for nine seasons, and won a Tony Award for his performance as Rent. He will also star in an upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic, Sexual Healing.

The CW has already signed a new deal for Gustin to return in The Flash season 9. Patton and Danielle Panabaker are also expected to sign new contracts. However, no other returning cast members have been confirmed.
