It’s been almost a year since we heard anything new about HBO Max’s Dune: The Sisterhood series. But now that the Dune franchise is officially underway, Warner Bros. appears to be finally getting the show off the ground. According to Variety, Johan Renck has signed on to direct the spinoff’s first two episodes.
Dune director Denis Villeneuve was originally planning to helm The Sisterhood’s pilot episode himself. But apparently, he’s too busy working on Dune: Part Two to make his way over to the spinoff. The upcoming series will take place 10,000 years before Villeneuve’s movie and explore the Bene Gesserit’s roots in House Harkonnen, wherein several sisters “combat forces that threaten the future of humankind.”
Renck previously garnered critical acclaim for helming all five episodes of HBO’s Chernobyl. His directorial work on the show later won him a Primetime Emmy Award, and he also shared in its Emmy win for Outstanding Limited Series. Renck has also directed episodes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Bloodline. His next movie, Spaceman, is expected to premiere on Netflix later this year.

Last summer, Diane Ademu-John was brought on as the new showrunner for Dune: The Sisterhood after its previous writer, Jon Spaihts, dropped out. Regardless, Spaihts (a co-writer of Dune), will still executive produce the series alongside Renck, Ademu-John, Villeneuve, Scott Z. Burns, Mark Friedman, and Matthew King. Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert are executive producing on behalf of author Frank Herbert’s estate. Kevin J. Anderson will co-executive produce.
HBO Max hasn’t announced a release date for Dune: The Sisterhood.
