Renews Black Mirror.
Variety’s report indicates that “the latest season is even more cinematic in scope, with each instalment being treated as an individual film.” There will also be more episodes of season 6 than the three episodes that premiered in 2019 for season 5. Why has it taken three years for a new season to come together? Varity notes that Brooker and his creative partner, Annabel Jones, left Endemol Shine Group, the company that owns the rights to the series. Brooker and Jones then set up their own production company, Broke and Bones, which received a massive investment from Netflix itself. In turn, Endemol was sold to Banijay Group in 2020. The only way to get the rights back was for Netflix to make a deal with Banijay Group, and that’s exactly what happened. Therefore, Brooker and Jones’ company will produce season 6 for Netflix under license from Banijay.
There’s currently no timeframe for when the sixth season will premiere. Netflix hasn’t even released an official statement about the news yet.
