In the very first episode of Stargirl, Joel McHale’s Sylvester Pemberton/Starman was fatally injured and forced to give his Cosmic Staff to Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) in the hope of finding a successor. That person turned out to be Pat’s step-daughter, Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger), and she took on the mantle of Stargirl. But as seen in Stargirl season 2, Sylvester isn’t as dead as he used to be. And now, the former Starman is Courtney’s new mentor.
The CW has released the first teaser trailer for Stargirl season 3, which finds Courtney and Pat still getting used to Sylvester’s presence in their lives. McHale is a series regular this season, so we’ll be seeing a lot of him this year. And as a former superhero with a lot more experience than Pat, there’s a good deal of practical knowledge that Sylvester can pass on to his successor.

Of course, there is still the lingering mystery of how Sylvester came back to life. Presumably that will also be explored in season 3. What we do know about the third season is that Neil Hopkins and Joy Osmanski have been promoted to series regulars. As of the second season finale, their characters, Lawrence “Crusher” Crock/Sportsmaster (Hopkins) and Paula Brooks/Tigress (Osmanski), are the new neighbors of Courtney’s family with their daughter, Artemis Crock (Stella Smith). And a family of supervillains living next to a superhero family is just asking for trouble.
Stargirl season 3 will premiere this fall on The CW.
