The Time War Begins in Amazon’s New Paper Girls Trailer

After Y: The Last Man failed to resonate with audiences on Hulu last year, Amazon Prime is trying its own luck with another beloved Brian K. Vaughan property. Ahead of its debut next month, the streaming service has just dropped a new preview for Paper Girls, based on the acclaimed comic book series by Vaughan and artist Cliff Chiang.

Amazon’s original Paper Girls teaser made the rounds back in May, though it didn’t reveal any actual footage from the series. However, this latest spot gives casual viewers a much better idea of what the show is all about. The story follows four young girls in 1988 who, while delivering newspapers one morning, make a shocking discovery that transports them more than 30 years into the future. They soon learn that rival time-traveling factions are at war with each other. And in addition to getting back home, the girls must also find ways to make sure they aren’t erased from history.

Clearly, the show is doing its best to honor Chiang’s unique visual style. The trailer’s opening scene, which shows the main characters looking up at a purple sky, is ripped straight from the original comics. Plus, we even get to see Erin Tieng (Riley Lai Nelet) come face to face with her older self, played by Ali Wong. The cast also includes Sofia Rosinsky as Mac Coyle, Camryn Jones as Tiffany Quilkin, and Fina Strazza as KJ Brandman. Amazon also released two new posters for the series, which you can view below.

Paper Girls will premiere on Amazon Prime on July 29.
