Boseman, Wright, and Abraham Get Emmy Noms For Marvel Roles

Viewers who tuned into last year’s Oscars were disappointed when Chadwick Boseman didn’t win a posthumous award for his final onscreen performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. But almost two years after his tragic passing, the beloved Black Panther star may be honored by a different golden statue this fall. Earlier today, Boseman received a nomination at the 74th Emmy Awards for his vocal performance as T’Challa/Star-Lord in Marvel’s What If…? animated series. And he isn’t the only Marvel actor getting recognized for his voiceover work. Jeffrey Wright also secured his own What If…? nomination for voicing Uatu the Watcher. Additionally, F. Murray Abraham has been nominated for playing Khonshu in Disney+’s Moon Knight.

What If…? notably marked Boseman’s final appearance in the MCU following his death in 2020. In its second episode, the series imagined an alternate universe where T’Challa joined up with the Ravagers instead of Peter Quill…and the results were nothing short of spectacular. This incarnation of the Wakandan prince was even able to convince Thanos to abandon his quest for cosmic genocide. Boseman later reprised his role in three more episodes of the show’s first season, including its action-packed finale.

Additionally, What If…? received a nod for Outstanding Animated Program (specifically for its “What If…Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?” episode) alongside other shows like Netflix’s Arcane and Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty. Meanwhile, in the Outstanding Short Form Animation category, The Boys Presents: Diabolical will compete against Love, Death + Robots and Star Wars: Visions, to name a few.

Unfortunately, no recent Marvel programs received any performance nods like WandaVision did last year. But a number of shows (including Loki, Hawkeye, and Moon Knight) will compete in technical categories like sound mixing/editing, stunt coordination, and cinematography. Composers Natalie Holt and Hesham Nazih also landed nominations for writing the music for Loki and Moon Knight, respectively. However, Stranger Things has a shot at winning the grand prize of Outstanding Drama Series following the conclusion of its fourth season earlier this month.

The 74th Emmy Awards will air on Monday, September 12 on NBC.
