The Flash Star Grant Gustin: ‘It Just Felt Like Time’ to End the Series

The Flash star Grant Gustin has opened up about ending the DC superhero TV series after nine seasons in the Arrowverse.

Why is The Flash coming to an end after Season 9?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gustin was asked about why decided to end his run as Barry Allen after Season 9. The actor said that “it just felt like time,” and that the series was originally set for a six-year run.

“It just felt like time,” Gustin explained. “A lot of people wanted us to get to 10 seasons, but in my mind we did 10 years — it was 2013 when I was cast as Barry Allen, and we finished in 2023. We had done everything we needed to do, the characters were in a good place, and we had reached the conclusion.

“Initially when we all signed on, it was a six-year run that got extended to seven. I got married [to physical therapist and trainer Andrea LA Thoma while filming] Season 5. I had a kid [daughter Juniper Grace Louise] during Season 7 — so obviously you start thinking about life changes at that point. Plus, Arrow had ended with Season 8, so I thought, ‘Let’s end with season 8.'”

Though producer Greg Berlanti would convince Gustin to go a bit further than Season 8, the series star then decided Season 9 would indeed be his last.

The Flash Season 9 stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Danielle Nicolet, and Brandon McKnight. The CW series will release its final episode on May 24 after being on the air since 2014.
