The Penguin, DC’s upcoming series that serves as a spin-off to 2022’s The Batman, has been delayed.
According to a recent article published by Deadline, the premiere of Max’s The Penguin has been pushed back due to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes.
The Penguin was never given an official release date from Max; however, according to a tweet from Decider’s Meghan O’Keefe, the series was originally expected to debut in spring 2024 but is now eyeing a fall 2024 release.
The WGA strike began on May 2, 2023, and ended on September 27, 2023, while the SAG-AFTRA began on July 14, 2023, and is still ongoing. The SAG-AFTRA strike calls for better pay, protection against artificial intelligence, and more for actors. The Penguin began filming in March 2023 but suspended production in June.

The Penguin is set one week after the events of The Batman and sees Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot rise to power while Gotham City remains flooded. Colin Farrell is reprising his role as Penguin following the character’s debut in The Batman, while Palm Springs’ Cristin Milioti will play Carmine Falcone’s daughter, Sofia Falcone.
Clancy Brown has also been cast as Salvatore Maroni in the series, while Michael Zegen will play Carmine’s son, Alberto Falcone.
Speaking at a 2024 programming showcase on November 2, 2023, HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys said of The Penguin, “I think the key, even within DC, is trying to tell different stories in different styles, to not try to do the same show over and over and over again. I would say Peacemaker is a very different show tonally than The Penguin. So, there’s not a uniformity to the storytelling and I think that helps.”
