Eric Kripke, creator of Prime Video‘s The Boys, shared a promising update on the fourth season’s progress now that the SAG-AFTRA strike has ended.
Kripke posted on X (formerly Twitter) with two previously released The Boys Season 4 poster images and a step-by-step summary of what needs to be completed in editing, VFX, and music and sound before the season’s release date could be confirmed. He enthusiastically added, “It could be our best season. For sure our craziest.”
Since it premiered in 2019, The Boys has set a goal of making each season the “craziest” yet, with a reputation for outrageous violence and mature content. Despite Season 4’s delay due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, hype has been building — and some hints have been dropped about what Karl Urban‘s Billy Butcher and Antony Starr‘s Homelander will be up to when they return to the screen.
The Boys is a subversion of the superhero genre
The Boys is based on a series of comics of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The show imagines a world in which superheroes are real, but funded and marketed by a megacorporation, Vought International, which engineered the drug that imparts powers. As a result, “supes” are viewed as celebrities and often concerned only with their image, so that many of them have become selfish, spoiled public idols. This is especially true of Homelander, the main antagonist of the story, who is also the most powerful.
This year saw the premiere of The Boys’ first live-action spin-off, Gen V, which adds a twist to the setting by focusing on young supes who are attending Vought’s Godolkin University. Already immersed in the corporation’s propaganda, they prepare for lives under the spotlight but are soon faced with the consequences of deadly secrets.
The Boys Seasons 1-3 and Gen V Season 1 are currently streaming on Prime Video. The Boys Season 4 will premiere in 2024.
