Mark Hamill is reaffirming that he’ll no longer voice the Joker following the passing of Kevin Conroy.
Speaking at the Fan Expo San Francisco, Hamill confirmed that he no longer plans to continue voicing DC’s Clown Prince of Crime after Conroy passed away in November 2022.
Via CultureCrave, Hamill said, “Without Batman, crime has no punchline.”
Hamill has spoken about stepping away from the Joker before
Hamill has said he’s done voicing the character before. Speaking with Empire Magazine in January 2023, he said, “They would call and say, ‘They want you to do the Joker,’ and my only question was, ‘Is Kevin Batman?’ If they said yes, I would say, ‘I’m in.’ We were like partners. We were like Laurel and Hardy. Without Kevin there, there doesn’t seem to be a Batman for me.”
Conroy and Hamill starred opposite one another as Batman and the Joker in numerous DC projects over the years, including the iconic Batman: The Animated Series. They also both reprised their roles in 1993’s Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, 2000’s Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, 2016’s Batman: The Killing Joke, and more.
When Conroy passed away in 2022, Hamill said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, “Kevin was perfection. He was one of my favorite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother. He truly cared for the people around him — his decency shone through everything he did. Every time I saw him or spoke with him, my spirits were elevated.”
While he may be done voicing the Joker, Hamill isn’t stepping away from Hollywood completely. He recently played a significant role in Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher, which premiered on Netflix in October 2023. He’s also set to star in Flanagan’s next movie, The Life of Chuck, and additionally voices the character of Art Rosebaum in Prime Video’s Invincible series.
