The world of Prime Video‘s superhero satire The Boys is expanding once again with a new spin-off series set south of the border.
According to Deadline, the new series — tentatively titled The Boys: Mexico — is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer serves as creator, writer, and executive producer. Andor star Diego Luna and Werewolf by Night star Gael García Bernal are also attached as executive producers. Luna and Bernal are said to be considering taking on acting roles in the series as well. However, neither actor would play a major character.
Amazon is searching for a co-showrunner to join Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who is currently writing The Boys’ latest spin-off. The new series will be shot on location in Mexico. In the meantime, its creators are working out a budget. Casting has not yet begun. Furthermore, beyond its Latin American setting, The Boys: Mexico’s story remains a mystery for the time being.
On the production side, all the usual suspects are involved. The Boys series creator Eric Kripke and his Kripke Enterprises are producing alongside Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg‘s Point Grey Pictures, Neil H. Moritz’s Original Film, Sony Pictures Television, and the aforementioned Amazon MGM Studios. Loreli Alba is expected to oversee the project for Point Grey.
The Boys’ on-screen universe so far
Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys premiered on Prime Video in 2019. The series follows a group of vigilantes who fight back against corrupt celebrity superheroes who abuse their fame and power. The Boys currently has three seasons under its belt, with a fourth due to arrive next year.
An animated spin-off series titled The Boys Presents: Diabolical hit Prime Video last year. The anthology series consists of eight episodes, though only three are considered canon to the main series. Gen V — a fully-canon, live-action spin-off series — premiered earlier this year. Gen V Season 1 leads directly into The Boys Season 4 (which will in turn set up Gen V Season 2).
