Gina Carano The Mandalorian lawsuit

Gina Carano Sues Disney and Lucasfilm Over Mandalorian Firing

Gina Carano is suing Disney and Lucasfilm after being fired from The Mandalorian.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Carano filed a lawsuit over “discrimination and wrongful termination” in California federal court against Disney and Lucasfilm on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.

The lawsuit claims she was fired for “voicing right-wing opinions on social media” and “refusing to conform” to the company’s viewpoints on certain issues. She further argued that “the entertainment giant turned a blind eye to her male costars, who allegedly made offensive and denigrating posts directed towards Republicans.”

Carano is seeking a court order that would force Lucasfilm to recast her in the role of The Mandalorian’s Cara Dune. She’s also looking for at least $75,000 plus punitive damages for “wrongful discharge and sex discrimination.”

Elon Musk is helping fund the lawsuit through X, formerly known as Twitter. “As a sign of X Corp’s commitment to free speech, we’re proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano’s lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination,” X’s head of business operations Joe Benarroch said in a statement.

Why was Gina Carano fired from The Mandalorian?

Carano played Cara Dune in two seasons of The Mandalorian but was fired from the series in February 2021. While Carano has made many controversial statements over social media, the firing came shortly after she published an Instagram post comparing being a Republican in the United States to being a Jewish person in Nazi Germany.

Lucasfilm, via Deadline, said at the time, “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
