James Gunn has offered an update on the forthcoming Creature Commandos series.
On Threads, Gunn was asked if there’s any news about Creature Commandos, which marks the first entry in the forthcoming DCU.
“Animatics and all recording done,” Gunn said. “Waiting on the first animated cuts.”
What do we know about Creature Commandos?
Based on the DC Comics created by J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, Creature Commandos is a new animated series written by Gunn.
The series’ voice cast includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, Steve Agee as John Economos, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Anya Chalotra as Circe.
Creature Commandos does not have an exact release date at this time; however, it is expected to premiere on Max in 2024. The first season of the animated series will have seven episodes.
Creature Commandos will be the first official project in Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. Following the series, Superman, which is written and directed by Gunn, will be released in July 2025.
Other planned television series that are part of the first chapter of the DCU, which is titled “Gods and Monsters,” include Peacemaker Season 2, Waller, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold. The Batman director Matt Reeves is also working on an Arkham series that Gunn previously confirmed will be part of the DCU.
Along with G.I. Robot and Weasel, Sean Gunn is also playing the villainous Maxwell Lord in the DCU, though it’s unclear what project the character will debut in. Grillo has also confirmed that Rick Flag Sr. will appear in forthcoming live-action projects following the first season of Creature Commandos.
