A Blue Beetle animated series is in the works from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery.
A new report from Deadline mentions that Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios have been developing the show alongside Miguel Puga, who has worked as a storyboard artist on shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, Gravity Falls, The Fairly OddParents, and Futurama.
Puga will serve as showrunner and director for the series, with Cristian Martinez also attached to the project as a writer.
What do we know about the Blue Beetle animated series?
Angel Manuel Soto, the director of the 2023 Blue Beetle movie, will act as executive producer on the series alongside Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and John Ricard. Galen Vaisman will oversee the new project project for DC Studios.
The voice cast of the Blue Beetle animated series has yet to be decided, but Deadline reports that DC has approached multiple actors, with the report mentioning that they have had “a positive response” on some returns.
Nothing is known about the series as of now, but it will reportedly build on the 2023 Blue Beetle movie and, if successful, could “potentially lead to a return to the big screen for the giant blue bug portrayed by Xolo Maridueña,” according to Deadline.
Blue Beetle was released in United States theaters in August 2023. The film was part of the now-defunct DCEU; however, Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes is expected to appear in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s forthcoming DCU.
