Spider-Noir: Lord & Miller Reportedly in ‘Heated Fight’ With Sony Over Series’ Budget

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are reportedly in a “heated fight” with Sony over the budget for Spider-Noir.

In 2019, Lord and Miller signed a nine-figure deal with Sony Pictures Television to develop live-action and animated comedy and drama series. More specifically, the duo was tasked with developing series based on the Marvel characters that Sony has the rights to.

A Silk: Spider Society series that Lord and Miller were going to executive produce alongside Amy Pascal and Angela Kang was officially greenlit in November 2022; however, it was scrapped at Amazon in May 2024.

It has also been announced that a series titled Spider-Noir is in the works. The live-action series will star Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, a character he originally voiced in animated form in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The cast also includes Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Li Jun Li, and Abraham Popoola.

What’s happening with the Spider-Noir series?

According to a recent article published by Puck, however, Lord and Miller and Sony Pictures Television have serious disagreements over the series’ budget.

Further details are not available at this time; although, Puck is also reporting that Sony Pictures Television is not expecting to renew the five-year deal that Lord and Miller signed in 2019 once the contract ends.

Spider-Noir is currently in production. The series “tells the story of an aging and down-on-his-luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”

Harry Bradbeer is directing the first two episodes of the series. He also serves as an executive producer alongside Lord, Miller, and Pascal.

Spider-Noir will first debut in the United States on MGM+ before it later arrives on Amazon Prime Video. An official premiere date has not yet been announced.
