Daybreak Games’ Marvel MMO Game Has Officially Been Cancelled

Sorry, gamers—it happened again. Just six months after Daybreak Games revealed plans to resurrect its abandoned Marvel MMO, the company has pulled the plug on the project for the second time in five years.

News of the MMO’s development broke last November after Daybreak’s parent company, Enad Global 7, mentioned the game during an investor presentation. Daybreak already had experience with superhero MMOs, having previously co-published DC Universe Online in 2011. Additionally, the studio recruited former City of Heroes designer Jack Emmert to serve as the project’s lead. But now, EG7 confirmed in a new blog post that its resources will be directed elsewhere.

“EG7 today announced it will be discontinuing the development of the Marvel project at Daybreak Games,” wrote the company. “Based on the re-evaluation of the development risk profile, size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board has decided to change the development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects.”

Rumors about Daybreak’s plans for a Marvel MMO began circulating in 2019. According to a post on Reddit (via Massively Overpowered), the studio had been developing an earlier version of the game for most of 2018. But on account of “top down issues,” Daybreak scrapped the project entirely, which ultimately prompted a round of layoffs.

EG7 also shared that it was planning to invest over SEK 500 million (more than $50 million in U.S. currency) in the Marvel MMO over the next three years. In the wake of its cancellation, however, that money will now go toward developing original IPs.
