DC Recruits Joe Hill for a New Line of Horror Comics

It looks like DC is about to embrace the horror genre in new ways outside of their mainstream universe. Via the publisher’s official website, DC has enlisted writer Joe Hill to curate a new line of horror-inspired comic titles.

Hill is perhaps best known for co-creating IDW’s Locke & Key with artist Gabriel Rodriguez. He’s also a horror novelist with books like NOS4A2, Horns, and Heart-Shaped Box. Now Hill’s imprint, appropriately enough, goes by the name of Hill House Comics. It will initially consist of five original miniseries, crafted by a different creative team.

“Anyone who’s paying attention knows we’re in the middle of a new golden age of horror: films like Get Out, Hereditary, It Follows and plain old It have raised the bar higher and higher,” Hill said in a statement. “Meanwhile, ongoing shows like AMC’s The Terror and Netflix’s Stranger Things have shattered preconceived notions about what’s possible in episodic terror TV. There’s great stuff happening in comics, of course—in a field of unbounded creativity and wacko visionaries, there’s always great stuff happening—but greedy me wants more.”

“At Hill House Comics we aim to shock the senses and soak the page in red, with new, hooky horror from seasoned old hands and young masters of the field, all set free to share their most disturbing nightmares…for your pleasure!” continued Hill. “The books are backed by DC’s second-to-none comic book craftsmanship, and we’re working with the very best editors on parole from Arkham Asylum to craft unputdownable tales of menace and madness. I can’t wait to share some fresh scares with comic book readers everywhere. It’s going to be fun.”

Hill himself is assuming writing duties on Basketful of Heads (which features art by Leomacs) and Plunge. DC has not announced an artist for the latter series so far. DC is also preparing to launch Daphne Byrne from Laura Marks and Kelley Jones; The Dollhouse Family from Mike Carey and Peter Gross; and The Low, Low Woods from Carmen Maria Machado and Dani. Additionally, Hill is penning a backup story called Sea Dogs. New chapters of this werewolf-centric tale will grace the back of every Hill House issue.

The Hill House Comics line will kick off with Basketful of Heads on October 30. You can check out cover art for each new series in the gallery below, then tell us what you think in the comment section!
