Skybound Entertainment‘s Gold Sponsor special for Free Comic Book Day 2024 may finally shed some light on Megatron’s whereabouts within the Energon Universe.
Diamond Comic Distributors recently revealed all 12 Gold Sponsor titles that will hit shelves as part of Free Comic Book Day next May. Among them is Transformers & G.I. Joe: Welcome to the Energon Universe from Skybound and Image Comics. Per Diamond, the one-shot special promises “three all new stories from the Energon Universe, with stunning revelations for the worlds of Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals.”
On its official website, Skybound itself revealed additional details regarding the Energon Universe special. The comic assembles an all-star roster of creators — including Robert Kirkman, Daniel Warren Johnson, Joshua Williamson, Lorenzo De Felici, and Ryan Ottley. Ottley also provides the cover art (which will be revealed at later time). Furthermore, Skybound publisher Sean Mackiewicz seemed to tease that Megatron would be at the center of the FCBD issue. “This is one of the Energon Universe’s most explosive stories yet, but what else can you expect from a comic starring the baddest Decepticon of them all?” he said.
“The launches of VOID RIVALS, TRANSFORMERS, DUKE and COBRA COMMANDER have reminded fans and retailers just how fun and surprising a comic book shared universe should be,” Mackiewicz continued. “Now, this Free Comic Book Day special kicks off our second year of stories by making sure everyone gets a chance to check them out.”
Starscream leads the Decepticons in the Energon Universe
Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers launched last month as part of Skybound and Image‘s Energon Universe. In this new shared universe of comic books, Starscream is the leader of the villainous Decepticons. Megatron, meanwhile, has been conspicuously absent. Save for some flashback appearances in this month’s Transformers #2, the iconic villain has yet to make his presence felt in the Energon Universe.
Even so, Skybound has continuously teased that the Decepticons’ original leader is indeed waiting in the wings. “Fans should expect can’t-miss moments from every issue of the Energon Universe, as secrets are unveiled along the path to answering the BIG questions, including #WhereIsMegatron,” the publisher wrote in multiple recent announcements (including the new FCBD one).
Free Comic Book Day 2024 takes place on Saturday, May 4.
