Lucifer Co-Showrunner Returns to Hell with The Big Burn

Joe Henderson and Lee Garbett both have a history with the Devil. The former is a producer and comic writer, who served as the co-showrunner on Lucifer. The latter is an artist who worked on the Lucifer series that inspired the show. Frequent collaborators, the two are joining forces with DSTLRY on a new comic book series, The Big Burn. This series, however, presents a less pleasant Devil than the Netfilix or Vertigo versions of Lucifer.

The Big Burn centers around Owen and Carlie, a pair of thieves who fancied themselves the Bonnie and Clyde of the 21st century. They thought their love and their wits could help them overcome everything. Unfortunately, when the law caught up with them, it looked like it was all over. Then the Devil himself showed up to offer them a deal – their freedom for their souls.

It seemed like a good deal to Owen and Carlie. Unfortunately, the loss of their souls also took the true love they felt for one another. This has left the thieves with a burning need to take back what they lost. The Big Burn will center upon their plan to recruit a crew of the damned to pull the ultimate heist. They intend to rob Hell, which takes the form of a giant casino, and steal their souls back.

The Big Burn will also feature colors by Lee Loughridge and letters by Simon Bowland. The first issue will also feature wrap-around covers by Lee Garbett and Tula Lotay. Both covers can be viewed below.

The Big Burn Creative Team Have a Hell of a History

Henderson and Garbett previously collaborated on the Eisner Award-nominated series Skyward and the teen graphic novel Shadecraft. Alone and apart, they have extensive experience with supernatural stories. Despite this, readers should not expect The Big Burn to retread their previous works.

“Creating these worlds with Lee is always an absolute dream, and I’m excited to introduce readers to our unique and deeply twisted take on Hell this summer,” notes writer Joe Henderson. “While The Big Burn features a darker tone than our previous work, the emotional journey of our star-crossed thieves Owen and Carlie maintains the same heartfelt storytelling we’re known for. It’s exciting for us to challenge ourselves with this book, and I always love a good heist.”

Lee Garbett echoed his partner’s enthusiasm, and praised their publisher DSTLRY. “Crafting a completely new take on Hell has been an awesome challenge, and I can’t wait for readers to see it come to life in DSTLRY’s beautiful, prestige format. Expect all the heart, action and character Joe and I love to deliver – this time with a devilish twist.”

The Big Burn #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere in July 2024.
