Dynamite Entertainment found great success with their recent partnership with Warner Bros. The publisher set sales records with their comic book revamp of the ThunderCats franchise and now stands poised to do well once again with a new series based on the Space Ghost cartoon.
Produced by Hanna-Barbera in 1966, Space Ghost detailed the adventures of the titular superhero. Accompanied by his young sidekicks, Jan and Jace, and a monkey named Blip, the Phantom of the Spaceways fought pirates and other assorted supervillains. The original series only lasted one season, yet it remained popular in reruns throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

New Space Ghost Comic a Return To Classic Form
Most modern audiences are more familiar with Space Ghost Coast To Coast than the original animated series. Billed as the world’s first animated talk show, SGC2C recycled animation from the original cartoons. It paved the way for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, and inspired two spin-offs, Cartoon Planet and The Brak Show.
By contrast, the new comic by writer David Pepose and artist Jonathan Lau is clearly based on the original series. The emphasis is on action, with Space Ghost presented as a masked mystery man. This leans into the fact that the original series never gave him a secret identity or an origin story. The preview also suggests that Blip will have a role of importance in the story of the new comic.
Dynamite confirmed that 33,500 copies of Space Ghost #1 have been sold so far. While a second printing is likely, fans should reserve a copy with their local comic book shops before the Final Order Cutoff on April 8, 2024. This will ensure that a copy is available for them when the comic releases.
