Jimmy Olsen has been through a lot as the best pal of Superman. Indeed, the photographer has taken on multiple superhero identities over the years, after temporarily acquiring superpowers on several occasions. However, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #28 by Mark Waid and Dan Mora puts Jimmy in a new and unexpected heroic identity: Champion of Earth.
With Superman and Batman lost in reality, and the rest of Earth’s heroes vanquished, it falls to Jimmy Olsen to save the day. The good news is that he has the magic of Mister Mxyzptlk on his side. The bad news is Jimmy has no idea how to use the phenomenal cosmic powers that have been thrust upon him.

Why Jimmy Olsen is Earth’s only hope
The current storyline of Batman/Superman: World’s Finest centers around a serial killer in the Fifth Dimension. The imps Bat-Mite and Mister Mxyzptlk sought out Batman and Superman for help in solving the killings. This took some doing, as death was largely unknown among the reality-altering people of the Fifth Dimension.
The culprit proved to be a mob of evil imps, who worshipped the villains of Earth-Prime like Bat-Mite worshipped Batman. They organized a massive fight between their chosen villains and their heroic enemies. Their goal was to find the greatest warrior on Earth. This lucky warrior would then face the imps’ leader, Doom-Mite, in a cosmic battle to end all cosmic battles.
Jimmy Olsen was dragged into the fight after Mister Mxyzptlk recalled all the superpowers he’d had in the past. This gave rise to a magical squad of Jimmy Olsen’s saving the day by fighting the imp army. It also led to Doom-Mite declaring Jimmy the winner by default, leading to Mxyzptlk’s cowardly betrayal. Despite this, it seems likely Jimmy Olsen will come out on top.
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #28 arrives in comic shops everywhere on June 18, 2024.
