Note From the Editor: Now that DC FanDome has shown us a look at Harley Quinn ‘s new look in The Suicide Squad , our special cosplay corespondent , Ashlynne Dae, decided to take a look back at Classic Harley Quinn. This week, Ashlynne is sharing a few photos of her take on Harley’s most iconic costume.
I have made many Harley Quinn cosplays in my day. But my favorite version of Harley will always be her classic jester suit from Batman: The Animated Series .
It would be awesome to see more than just two seconds of Margot Robbie rocking this costume in a Harley Quinn movie! That would be a dream!

Classic Harley Quinn Cosplay #1

It’s so iconic, and yes, many people have done it. But I think that’s what’s so fun about a cosplay that a lot of people have already done. You can put a little spin on it that’s a little more unique!

When I made this costume most people were making theirs out of normal four way spandex or super shiny PVC or latex. So I chose to make mine out of this neat matte stretch pleather fabric.
Four years ago, it was a bit harder to find, and I had the benefit of being able to shop for it in the LA Fabric District.

Now, I see people make theirs out of this too, because this fabric is more readily available and it looks really freakin’ cool.
It’s nice to see interesting cosplay materials become more easily accessible to see what other people create with them. Especially with Yaya Han’s fabric line in JoAnn’s stores across the U.S., which usually feature this type of fabric!

I have always liked Harley for her character development over the years. Being in abusive relationships myself, I identified with her experience with the Joker, as well as her ability to escape that relationship and go on to discover new aspects of herself without him.

And I adore the fact that she ended up in a polyamorous relationship with Poison Ivy! Even though Harley had slip ups and slide backs, and failed sometimes, she became stronger through each one.
She picked herself up, and made herself laugh, and tried to see the funny side of life.

I also appreciated that she was never really meant to be a role model. She was after all, a bad guy, and I liked her for it. Characters like Harley give us space to examine our darker sides, our mischievous sides, and our traumatized sides.
But doing so without actually hurting anyone or causing irreparable chaos and destruction.

Plus Harley’s accent is adorable! She just wants to live, laugh, love, and occasionally punch a face or two. I appreciate that about her!
I hope we continue to see her classic suit pop up here and there, even though Harley’s movie costumes are way more popular now.
