Exclusive Gremlins Figure Nods to Cancelled Comic-Con and Olympics

Had 2020 gone as planned, fans might be enjoying either the Olympic games or San Diego Comic-Con this summer. Fate had other plans, and brought a pandemic globally. So it’s not a little ironic that NECA‘s Gremlins figure set to be a Comic-Con exclusive represents the Olympics. (Or rather, “summer games.” Calling it Olympic would require an extra licensing deal.) Both the original movie and summer Olympics came out in 1984, and a seasonal newspaper ad depicted a Gremlin ready to swim for a gold medal. Needless to say, to anyone who saw the film — getting one wet could become a really bad idea.

The figure itself is no ordinary Gremlin: it’s ringleader Stripe. And he looks ready to try to multiply, with scuba mask, snorkel, and a sexy Speedo bathing suit. Once his skin blisters start to pop, they can’t stop, and a new army of the creatures arrives. But to scare opponents away in the meantime, Stripe also wields a “summer games” torch. Though Gremlins dislike bright light, the flame’s just enough for him to handle, and burn a person with.

Like most other NECA would-be Comic-Con exclusives, the exclusive Gremlins figure should hit Walmart starting July 23rd, though a few leaked early. NECA’s online store also intends to sell extras at a $5 markup. For anyone who missed out on Stripe before, it’s a good way to grab the bad guy. Fans who already have a larger collection can enjoy the fun variant.
