In most superhero movies, superpowers generally give the hero that extra boost of courage to take on their adversaries. But that’s not the case with Captain Marvel. As previous clips have shown, Carol Danvers demonstrates her mettle as an Air Force pilot prior to becoming a Kree-human hybrid. In other words, her Kree abilities aren’t, as the trailer advertises, what make her a hero. Brie Larson and her co-star, Samuel L. Jackson, discussed this aspect of the character in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“It’s kinda crazy, too, that being Captain Marvel doesn’t necessarily define you,” said Jackson. “When you do make the discovery of who Carol Danvers was and what was going on, she had a life [before getting her powers], and she’s pretty badass already. So that whole thing about, you know, ‘You are what we made you.’ It’s like, ‘That’s some bulls***.’ Like, ‘I was a badass way before we got there.’”

Larson indicated that Carol’s flawed nature is what attracted her to the role in the first place.
“But that’s a huge part of why I felt comfortable doing this, because originally I was like, ‘I’m not interested in an idealized version of perfection.’” explained Larson. “I’m not interested in portraying perfect, strong women that never make the wrong choice because I consider myself a risk-taker, and I make a lot of mistakes because of that. That’s how it works. Big swings sometimes mean a big failure”
With just over a week to go until Captain Marvel hits theaters, audiences seem to be responding positively. Early reactions have likened the film to a fun, space-faring buddy cop movie. Additionally, Carol’s relationships with Jackson’s Nick Fury and Lashana Lynch’s Maria Rambeau have been singled out as strong points.
