Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame!
Avengers: Endgame has been received as a satisfying conclusion to the current Marvel saga. Although it’s a somber farewell for some characters, it also marks the new beginning for others. This includes Sam Wilson a.k.a. the Falcon. Anthony Mackie recently spoke with IMDB about learning the fate of his character in Endgame. Mackie explained that he didn’t know about the film’s conclusion, since he hadn’t read the script. However, Evans actually came to his house and told him that Sam was Steve’s choice to be the next Captain America.
“We were at his house and he goes, ‘You excited?’ And I go, ‘What are you talking about?’ and he goes, ‘You don’t know?’ He jumps up, runs out of the room and comes back in with the script,” recalled Mackie.
“I am very happy I got that moment with Chris, for him to not only pass me the shield, but to tell me it was happening,” added Mackie.

Mackie then discussed bringing a new dynamic to the role of Captain America.
“It means a lot to me for my sons to see Captain America as a black dude and for me to be that dude to my sons,” said Mackie. “So that moment was not just, ‘Hey, we’re acting.’ It was more of a thing. And then they cut and I cried…Chris cried…the Russos cried…everyone cried. It was an emotional day.”
Mackie and Sebastian Stan will return in the Disney+ series, Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Presumably, that story will deal with Sam’s transition from the Falcon to the new Captain America.
