Joker Reclaims Box Office Crown From Maleficent

Update:  Monday, October 28. Looks like Maleficent won after all. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil narrowly held on to #1 with $19.4 million. That means Joker came in second place, with $19.2 million. The original story is below.

Last weekend, Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil debuted in the top spot at the box office. However, Angelina Jolie’s revisionist villain couldn’t hold off the Clown Prince of Crime forever. Todd Phillips’ Joker movie has reclaimed the box office crown with $18.9 million. That brings the Joaquin Phoenix-led film to $277.8 million, domestically. Worldwide, Joker has grossed approximately $850 million and become the highest grossing R-rated movie.

Via Deadline, Maleficent didn’t go down without a fight. Mistress of Evil pulled in $18.5 million for second place. Those numbers may change when the final tally comes in on Monday. Regardless, both Disney and Warner Bros. project that Joker will remain in the top spot. Meanwhile, The Addams Family animated film leapfrogged over Zombieland: Double Tap. Their battle for #3 and #4 was also tight, as The Addams Family had $11.6 million while Double Tap had $11.5 million. Rounding out the top five was Countdown, with $9 million.

Closing out the top ten, The Light House had $3.1 million at #8, The Current War followed with $2.73 million at #9, and Abominable hit number 10 with $2 million.

Looking ahead to next week, Terminator: Dark Fate will likely be the next domestic box office champ. However, Dark Fate is currently underperforming internationally, with just $13 million in ten countries over the weekend.
